The morning bounce did not survive the close: IDEXX leapt 21.88% on earnings and Brent crude crashed 7.63% as Hormuz talks advanced, yet the Nasdaq-100 still fell 1.39% — because the chip wreck widened, with Lumentum down 18.61% and Marvell down 12.75% after Marvell's $115 billion all-stock deal to acquire Lumentum (Barron's).
Recap
Monday's bounce was real at the open and gone by the close. SPY opened at $759.44 and QQQ at $695.31 (Robinhood), but at the official closes SPY fell 0.48% to $752.12, QQQ fell 1.36% to $681.13 and DIA rose 0.43% to $519.37 — the Dow was the only green benchmark. The S&P 500 index printed 7,541.40 (-0.51% vs Friday's 7,580.07) and the Nasdaq-100 printed 27,989.82 (-1.39% vs 28,384.85), with the VIX rising 8.91% to 21.15 and the Russell 2000 easing 0.21% to 2,805.88 (Robinhood index quotes, ~4:15–4:35 PM ET).
Oil did the day's biggest macro move: front-month Brent crude settled at $104.77, down 7.63% (Dow Jones Market Data), and WTI settled at $96.46, down 7.4%, as U.S.–Iran talks in Doha entered a third day and Tehran proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz within two days if its conditions are met (AP). The factory data argued the other way on costs: the October ISM Manufacturing PMI rose to 55.5 from September's 54.5, with production at 59.0, employment at 52.4 and the prices index still hot at 75.2 (down from 77.9) — sixteen industries reported higher raw-material prices and none reported decreases (ISM, via AP).
The chip complex, Friday's wreck, kept wrecking: the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) fell 3.79% to $453.65, Intel fell another 8.84% to $59.95, AMD fell 7.54% to $466.74 ahead of its Tuesday-night report, Micron fell 5.84% to $833.06 and Broadcom fell 1.13% to $322.41 (Robinhood closes). The deal tape added its own casualties: Marvell fell 12.75% to $171.35 and Lumentum fell 18.61% to $684.22 after Marvell announced a $115 billion all-stock deal to acquire Lumentum (Barron's). Oracle fell 8.83% to $119.13 after filing to raise $20 billion through bond and share sales to fund its AI build-out (Reuters). Energy followed crude down — ExxonMobil fell 4.01% and Chevron fell 3.23% (Robinhood closes). Crypto softened with risk: Bitcoin's Robinhood evening mark was $76,690.38 (-2.06% vs its open) and Ether's was $2,249.24 (-1.80% vs its open).
