Netflix earned $0.87 a share against an $0.82 estimate — and the stock still fell about 5% after the bell, because its fourth-quarter guidance ($0.67 vs $0.73 expected) and a cut to its ad-revenue forecast mattered more than the beat. The Dow gained 530 points as oil backed off $110.
Recap
The Dow did the day's heavy lifting — and Netflix still stole the close. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 529.85 points (+1.02%) to 52,495.88 and the S&P 500 gained 21.84 points (+0.28%) to 7,712.57, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite edged down 6.07 points (-0.02%) to 26,424.82 (WSJ). The index ETFs matched (Robinhood official closes): DIA $524.39 (+1.05%), SPY $769.01 (+0.33%) and QQQ $717.52 (-0.12%). The reversal driver was oil: stocks opened lower, then flipped after reports that mediators had proposed reviving U.S.–Iran talks (WSJ); Brent crude fell back below $109 a barrel (WSJ) and WTI futures were down about 2.5% to $101.10 around 4 PM ET (Investopedia) — a fast unwind of the $110 scare that led this morning's brief. Rates cooperated: the 10-year Treasury yield eased to 5.116% (WSJ). Earnings carried the Dow: 3M rose more than 5% after raising its full-year profit forecast (Reuters), Equifax jumped 11.4% and Hasbro gained 5.6% on beats (Reuters), while GM fell 6.9% on a soft outlook and GE Aerospace dropped about 5% despite a profit beat (Reuters).
The Mag 7 mostly lagged (Robinhood official closes): TSLA $373.775 (+1.55%) and AMZN $262.76 (+0.12%) rose, while MSFT $532.13 (-0.26%), NVDA $216.48 (-0.28%), AAPL $339.73 (-0.94%), GOOGL $340.32 (-1.12%) and META $694.44 (-1.56%) fell — Meta's fifth straight down session (TradingKey), with Meta and Tesla both reporting Wednesday. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index slipped 0.29% (TradingKey); MU closed at $895.95 (-0.99%, Robinhood) and CoreWeave recovered to $62.125 (+1.64%, Robinhood) after a weak premarket.
Then came the after-hours verdict: Netflix beat third-quarter estimates — EPS $0.87 vs $0.82 expected on revenue of about $12.9 billion, in line (Barron’s) — but guided fourth-quarter EPS to $0.67 vs $0.73 expected and cut its 2026 advertising revenue forecast to about $2.7 billion from $3 billion (Reuters); NFLX closed the regular session at $68.67 (-1.69%, Robinhood) and fell about 5% after hours (Reuters). SpaceX also reported after the close: revenue more than doubled in its first profitable quarter as a public company, and the shares rose about 2% after hours (WSJ).
