October 19, 2026Morning Brief

Drafted premarket Monday, October 19, before the opening bell, after Friday capped the worst week since late June for the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq.

MarketsOnDeck Morning Brief, October 19, 2026 — Nasdaq futures jump 0.99% as Nvidia bounces back

After the Nasdaq’s worst week since June, futures are pointing the other way — Nasdaq 100 futures +0.99% and Nvidia +1.5% in extended-hours trade — but the rebound has to survive the biggest earnings gauntlet of the season, with SpaceX and Netflix on Tuesday and Meta and Tesla on Wednesday.

Futures point to a rebound open after Friday capped the worst week since late June for the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite (Reuters). As of 4:59 AM ET (Reuters): Nasdaq 100 E-minis +292.25 points (+0.99%), S&P 500 E-minis +36 points (+0.47%) and Dow E-minis +18 points (+0.03%). Two of Friday’s headwinds eased: Brent futures fell 1.8% to around $107 a barrel after President Trump waived some sanctions on Russia, and the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield fell to 5.085% (Reuters). Friday’s official closes (Robinhood equity quotes) show the damage the rebound has to repair: $SPY $763.30 (-1.10% vs its $771.79 prior close), $QQQ $709.86 (-2.49% vs $728.00) and $DIA $519.09 (-0.38% vs $521.07). The Mag 7 closed almost uniformly lower — $META $709.34 (-3.72%), $GOOGL $340.59 (-2.47%), $TSLA $354.67 (-2.14%), $MSFT $528.95 (-1.94%), $AMZN $249.95 (-1.89%) and $NVDA $214.14 (-1.42%) — with $AAPL the only gainer at $343.41 (+0.41%). Extended-hours trade early Monday was repairing tech first: NVDA $217.32 (+1.48% vs its Friday close), QQQ $717.52 (+1.08%), SPY $767.02 (+0.49%), AVGO $336.74 (+2.41%), CRWV $63.16 (+2.88%) and INTC $93.20 (+3.79%), while META $704.97 (-0.62%) and TSLA $353.06 (-0.45%) still lagged (Robinhood extended-hours prints, ~7:17 AM ET). Intel’s premarket jump followed a JPMorgan upgrade to neutral from underweight (Reuters). Crypto was quiet: BTC mark $82,157.33 (-0.32% vs its session open) and ETH mark $2,414.46 (-0.30% vs open), Robinhood crypto quotes at 7:18 AM ET.

Friday closes: SPY 763.30 -1.10%, QQQ 709.86 -2.49%, DIA 519.09 -0.38%. Sources: Reuters, Robinhood.

Today’s earnings calendar is light ahead of the week’s main events (Robinhood earnings calendar, Oct 19). Already reported this morning: Fifth Third (FITB) beat, EPS $1.13 vs a $0.87 estimate, and Cleveland-Cliffs (CLF) beat, $0.28 vs $0.24; VinFast (VFS) missed, -$0.53 vs a -$0.31 estimate. After today’s close: Steel Dynamics (STLD, est $5.41), Zions (ZION, est $1.65), Western Alliance (WAL, est $2.43), Crown Holdings (CCK, est $2.26), Wintrust (WTFC, est $3.30) and AGNC (est $0.39). The week builds fast: Tuesday brings GM (est $3.61) and GE Aerospace (est $2.01) before the open, then SpaceX (SPCX, est $0.16) and Netflix (NFLX, est $0.82) after the close; Wednesday brings Meta (est $5.89) and Tesla (est $0.40), both after the close. Levels to watch: NVDA closed Friday at $214.14 and traded at $217.32 in extended hours — reclaiming Thursday’s $217.23 close is the first sign the chip slide is over; QQQ closed $709.86 with extended trade at $717.52, still below its $728.00 Thursday close; SPY closed $763.30 with extended trade at $767.02.

Watch today: whether NVDA holds its extended-hours reclaim of $217.23 into the regular session and QQQ holds above $717.52 — if the rebound survives the first hour with oil lower and the 10-year at 5.085%, earnings week starts from strength; if NVDA fades back under Friday’s $214.14 close, Friday’s rout is not done.

Why this matters: a green premarket after the worst week since June is a promise, not a rebound — it only counts if NVDA holds its reclaim of $217.23 through the open with oil and the 10-year both easing, and the answer sets up the biggest earnings week of the season. For the book, the stakes are concentrated: both SPCX call lines expire Friday, and SpaceX reports Tuesday night — this week’s tape decides them.
